Hello lovelies!

We’re excited to announce the creation of Wisco Girl on the Trails!

This is a blog that will feature our experiences as we explore all sorts of trails this summer state wide. A list is already in the making and we are excited to hit the ground running. While we know that not everyone who follows our blog lives in the beautiful (and yet weather tempermental) state of Wisconsin, we are hoping that down the road, we will get to travel out of state and possibly out of country, to explore even more trails. So if you know of any good ones, drop them in the comment section below!

Until then, we will travel around Wisconsin and if you ever happen to find yourself within the state lines, perhaps you can check out the trails too!

The Beginning of Your Yoga Journey


First off, the differences between the two. Yoga is a Hindu spiritual and ascetic discipline, including breath control, simple meditation, and the adoption of specific bodily postures, is widely practiced for health and relaxation. On the other hand, meditation is a practice where an individual uses a technique – such as mindfulness, or focusing their mind on a particular object, thought or activity – to train attention and awareness, and achieve a mentally clear and emotionally calm and stable state.

Even though yoga and meditation are two different things, they do go hand in hand. Both of these practices are ancient, abopted by Western culture around the 1980s and soon became extremely popular.

Yoga

Although there are many different variations of yoga, the benefits still remain the same.

Back Pain Relief

Yoga sessions once or twice a week can help with discomfort and back pain. Through various stretchs, poses, and/or exercises, your back muscles will experience greater flexiability and agility with an added bonus of increased core strength.

Assist with Arthritis Management

Slow, easy paced yoga forms help relieves tension, as well as pain in joints or muscles. A few specific forms of yoga, such as Iyengar and Bikram help withh rheumatoid arthritis.

Migraines Be Gone

For those who search for alternatives to combat headaches or migranes, yoga and meditation can help. Yoga is an excellent exercise to do to help prevent them or to help with an existing one. If able, the bridge pose is most beneficial. It helps relieve the tension in the neck and shoulders, areas that can cause a migrane.

Meditation

Meditation has become highly popular in managing stress levels. There are several different types of meditation that have become popular and they all share the same benefits as well.

Emotional Improvement

Since meditation requires deep relaxation, coming out of your thoughtful state leaves many feeling refreshed. It is encouraged to look at the postive aspects of your life and focus only on that. So after the 10 minutes, you are feeling more up-beat and positive.

Stress Management

The main reason many people practice meditation is the benefits of reduced stress levels. Regularly meditating helps reduces the stress responses that happen in the brain throughout the day. So the more you meditate, the better you handle and react to stress which is a huge bonus when it comes to high blood pressure.

Better Concentration

With helping to manage stress and improve emotions, obviously you would be able to concentrate better. BUT, meditaiton also helps increase levels of gray matter concentration in the brain. So it is an added bonus, leaving you to regulate and process emotions more effectively, help with your memory, and boost your learning ability.

Just Desserts

With Easter coming around the corner, here is a cute and delicious treat to share with the family!  Here is a step by step recipe for personal cheesecakes!

The first step is to Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Next, line your cupcake tin with liners.

First you will make the crust by mixing the graham cracker crumbs with melted butter.

Press the crust into the bottom of each of the cupcake liners.

Now it’s time to make the actual cream cheese layer.  Beat the cream cheese, sugar, and vanilla with a mixer until blended.  Add eggs 1 at a time and mixing on a low speed after each egg is added until just blended.

Spoon the cheesecake mixture over the crusts.

Bake for 18-20 minutes or until the centers are almost set.  Let them cool completely and then refrigerate for 2 hours.

Now time to decorate!  You can use shredded coconut to form a nest and fill it with chocolate eggs.  If you are not a coconut person you can also use nut toppings which is what is pictured below.  They make the perfect Easter treat!

Here is the full recipe with instructions!

  • 1-1/4 cup graham crumbs
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 3 pkg. (250 g each) Philadelphia Brick Cream Cheese, softened
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup plus 2 Tbsp. desiccated unsweetened coconut, toasted
  • 54 speckled chocolate eggs (250 g)

Directions

  1. Heat oven to 350°F.
  2. Mix graham crumbs and butter; press onto bottoms of 18 paper-lined muffin cups.
  3. Beat cream cheese, sugar and vanilla with mixer until blended. Add eggs, 1 at a time, mixing on low speed after each just until blended. Spoon over crusts.
  4. Bake 18 to 20 min. or until centers are almost set. Cool completely. Refrigerate 2 hours.
  5. Top each cheesecake with 1 Tbsp. coconut; shape to resemble bird’s nest. Fill with chocolate eggs.

Succulent Secrets

Houseplants and succulents can be a great addition to any living space. The extra pop of color can really brighten up a space, but did you know that there are also health benefits to having them around? Some of these benefits are listed below as well as tips on taking care of your beautiful plants.

1. Increase Productivity

Indoor plants just tend to make you feel more relaxed and concentrated. Having them around throughout your home, apartment, or dorm room, just seems to put you in an overall better mood, thus increasing your productivity as well!

2. You Can Put Them Anywhere

Succulents and cacti can pretty much be put anywhere and be able to survive with minimal care needed. As long as they are able to get a small amount of sunlight and you water them once every couple of weeks, you should be good to go while giving the space a pop of color. I am able to keep them alive in my tiny dorm room which probably means they will survive literally anywhere.

3. Help Create Clean Air

By having small plants or succulents around they are in a way filtering the carbon monoxide that you are breathing out and returning you with the wonderful gift of oxygen. Basically, they can help you survive which is pretty important.

Succulents and cacti in specific are so simple to take care of. You definitely do not need a green thumb in order for them to strive. I water my cacti about once every couple of weeks and my other succulents about once every week. You could also simply put an ice cube in every few weeks and they will stay hydrated that way as well.

The nice things about these types of plants is that they can easily grow inside. As long as they are in front of a window and get some sunlight throughout the day, they will be fine.

Overall succulents are a very easy thing to take care of, but you can get lots of benefits out of them. They can add a nice pop of color, along with some health benefits, at little cost or time commitment from you.

Yummy for the Tummy: Sushi Style!

Yesterday, I went to a sushi bar for the first time to try actually sushi. I have been to places that sell sushi before but every time I went, I ended up getting bento boxes with at most a California roll. I decided to be adventurous and try it out with one of my friends!

My Order

I ordered a Bahamas roll which had crab and mango as well as avocado with a crunchy top. This roll is on the left side in the picture below. I also ordered a Paradise roll which had shrimp tempura, lobster salad, salmon, and avocado with special sauce on top. This roll is on the right side in the picture below.

I tried to order different types of sushi with different meats to add variety and see what I would like. The textures were different for these two with the Bahamas roll being more soft and chewy while the Paradise roll had more of a crunch to it.

Health Benefits

Sushi has many different health benefits. Here are only a few to list:

  • sushi is rich in omega 3 and fatty acids
  • great source for calcium to build strong bones
  • source for iron in your blood
  • helps slow down the aging process of your skin
  • as well as a great source for protein

Overall, my first experience with sushi was nothing that I ever imagined it to be. It was above and beyond! Researching the benefits that it gives also makes it exciting to try sushi and hopefully try more.

Facial Fun

Face Masks are a great way to de-stress and relax. You can put one on right before bed or before you take a bubble bath. There are so many different face masks on the market from sheet masks to clay masks, and now they even have roll-on face masks. There are also many different scents and formulas that each have their own benefits.

Lavender

Lavender is known to be relaxing. I will typically use lavender scented face masks before bed, as it will help me relax and allow me to fall asleep faster. These are also a great option for when you are feeling stressed throughout the day, I tend to do a lot of these during finals week.

Oatmeal Based

Oatmeal based facemasks moisturize your skin. It is said that the oatmeal hydrates your skin and gives you a natural looking glow. It also helps to get the dirt out of your pores, making it a good option for you if you have acne.

Charcoal

Charcoal face masks have become more popular in recent years. Like the oatmeal based masks, they clean out your pores and help to treat blackheads and acne.

Sheet Mask vs. Clay Mask

Sheet masks are a really easy, convenient way to do a face mask. You simply take it out of the package, put it on your face for 10 minutes, and remove. With these, you do not have to get your hands dirty rubbing the clay ones over your face.

I personally prefer clay masks. I feel like compared to the sheet masks, they make my skin softer and it feels more “natural”. They are more inconvenient in that you have to get your hands dirty to put it on, and then go and rinse it off your face when you are done. There are benefits and cons to both, so choose whichever works for you or switch back and forth between them.

Personal Favorite

I just recently discovered my new favorite face mask of all time and it is the Olay Mask Clay Sticks. These take easy face masks to the next level by letting you roll it on while getting the effect of a regular clay mask without the messy part. They have a few different options depending on what you are using the mask for. I have tried the Glow Boost one so far and it gives my skin a natural glow while making it feel extra soft as well.

4 Ingredient Energy Balls

Sometimes finding healthy, tasty snacks can be a struggle. I know for me I hate having to spend a lot of time making something, which usually leads to me just going for a bag of chips. Recently I found a new favorite snack and it only has 4 ingredients and can be made super quick. Below are the easy steps on how to make these energy balls.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup oats
  • 2/3 cup peanut butter
  • 2 Tbsp honey
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips

Directions

Makes about 12-14 balls

The first step is to add all of the ingredients into the bowl.

Next, stir with a spatula until all of the ingredients are mixed together well.

After all ingredients are mixed together, place the bowl into the fridge for about 20 minutes. This will allow the mixture to stiffen a bit, allowing you to roll them into balls.=

Finally, remove the mixture from the fridge and roll into about 1 1/2 inch balls. I used a cookie scoop to make sure they were all the same size, but you can just estimate or use a regular spoon to ensure they are the same size. Store them in a container, and keep them in the fridge, that is if you don’t eat them all at once!

Good Morning my lovelies! In two weeks, I will be starting each weekday with a different smoothie and I would LOVE to hear your input. I have compiled a list of different smoothie recipes that I have found all over the Internet. HOWEVER, the list is too long and this is where I would love to hear your opinions.

On Saturday, March 9th, a reflection on each smoothie will be wrapped up into one big blog post with pictures of the hopefully delicious looking smoothies (a bit hesitant on the green looking ones though). So Smooth Sipping will be a three part blog post.

Smoothie List

Orange Banana

  • 1 1/2 cups freshly squeezed orange juice (4 oranges)
  • 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 1 cup strawberries, tops removed and cut in 1/2
  • 1 to 1 1/2 ripe bananas

Peach Pie

  • 1 cup unsweetened frozen peaches
  • 1 tablespoon honey, plus more to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • pinch ground nutmeg
  • pinch ground ginger
  • 1/2 cup nonfat or 1% low-fat milk
  • 1/2 cup non-fat plain yogurt

Gingery Kale

  • 1 banana, peeled and broken in chunks
  • 1 cup (6 oz/185 g) frozen mango chunks
  • 2 cups (2 oz/60 g) torn kale leaves
  • 1 cup (8 oz/250 g) Greek yogurt, plain, low-fat
  • 1 cup (8 fl oz/250 ml) 100-percent orange juice
  • 1 slice fresh ginger

Honeydew

  • 2 cups honeydew melon, cubed
  • 1 cup vanilla low-fat yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons apple juice, from frozen concentrate
  • Ice
  • Honeydew melon slices for garnish

Mango, Strawberry, and Pineapple

  • 1 mango, skin removed, cut into 1-inch dice, frozen
  • 5 strawberries, stems removed, cut in half, frozen
  • 1 cup diced pineapple
  • 1 cup orange jucie

Green Morning

  • 2 cups vanilla almond, coconut, or soy milk
  • 1/2 cup whole oats
  • 1 1/4 cups fresh, frozen or canned peaches, or mango cubes
  • 1 cup ice cubes
  • 1 cup baby spinach, loosely packed
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 bananas

Papaya

  • 1 small papaya, peeled, seeded, and diced
  • 1 banana, sliced
  • 1/2 cup sliced strawberries
  • Pineapple wedges and/or maraschino cherries for garnish

Watermelon and Cucumber

  • One 2-inch piece English cucumber, peeled and roughly chopped (1/2 cup)
  • 3 tablespoons low-fat buttermilk
  • 1 tablespoon honey, optional
  • 1/2 small lime, juiced (1 tablespoon)
  • 2 cups cubed seedless watermelon, frozen

Sunrise

  • 1 cup chopped ripe strawberries
  • 1 cup chopped seeded watermelon
  • 1 cup chopped fresh peach
  • 1 cup raspberry sorbet
  • 1/4 cup freshly squeezed orange juice

Razzy Blue

  • 1 banana
  • 16 whole almonds
  • 1/4 cup rolled oats
  • 1 tablespoon flaxseed meal
  • 1 cup frozen blueberries
  • 1 cup raspberry yogurt
  • 1/4 cup Concord grape juice
  • 1 cup 1% buttermilk

Strawberry Oatmeal Breakfast

  • 1 cup soy milk
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1 banana, broken into chunks
  • 14 frozen strawberrys
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon white sugar

California

  • 7 large strawberries
  • 1 (8 oz.) container lemon yogurt
  • 1/3 orange juice

Pineapple and Banana

  • 4 ice cubes
  • 1/4 fresh pineapple – peeled, cored, and cubed
  • 1 large banana, cut into
  • 1 cup pineapple or apple juice

Kale and Banana

  • 1 banana
  • 2 cup chopped kale
  • 1/2 cup light unsweetened soy milk
  • 1 tablespoon flax seeds
  • 1 teaspoon maple syrup

Kiwi Strawberry

  • 1 banana
  • 6 strawberries
  • 1 kiwi
  • 1/2 cup vanilla frozen yogurt
  • 3/4 cup pineapple and orange juice blend
